Tar Heels trail Duke 17-15 at halftime

Duke leads North Carolina 17-15 at halftime on Senior Day at Kenan Stadium.

UNC struck first as sophomore Marquise Williams scored on a one-yard run with 8 minutes 22 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Williams’ touchdown was set up by junior Eric Ebron’s 79-yard reception only a few plays earlier. The catch and run was Ebron’s longest of his career.

Ebron, who declared for the NFL draft earlier this week and is celebrating his Senior Day, has three receptions for 103 yards. His 103 yards in the first half gives him his third 100-yard game of the season and breaks Vernon Davis’ ACC single-season record for most receiving yards by a tight end.

The Tar Heels allowed back-to-back scores by Duke on a 17-yard touchdown reception by Jamison Crowder and a Ross Martin 22-yard field goal. UNC briefly pulled ahead in the second quarter on Williams’ second touchdown of the day followed by the first successful two-point conversion of the season.

But the Tar Heels’ lead was quickly erased when DeVon Edwards notched his second kickoff return touchdown of the season on the next play. Edwards returned the ball for 99 yards, his second shortest kickoff return touchdown this season after recording a 100-yard return against N.C. State.

Duke collected 17 first downs in the first half to UNC’s seven. The Blue Devils amassed 261 yards on 44 plays while the Tar Heels gained 236 yards on 31 plays.

Williams completed eight of 15 attempts for 156 yards and scored both of UNC’s touchdowns on short runs.
