UNC women's basketball trails Virginia Tech at the half

At halftime, the North Carolina women’s basketball team trails Virginia Tech 25-24.

Though Virginia Tech is last in the ACC standings with a conference record of 2-11, the Hokies played close games with Duke and N.C. State and came out with the same intensity against the Tar Heels.

Virginia Tech jumped out to a commanding 19-7 lead, fueled by guard Vanessa Panousis who leads all scorers with 13 points.

But the Tar Heels answered, piecing together a 17-6 run throughout the final 12 minutes of the half. During the span, UNC took command on defense, holding the Hokies without a field goal for nine minutes.

The Tar Heels got on a bit of a drought themselves offensively, going more than seven minutes without a field goal. And for the game, UNC is only shooting 27 percent from the floor.

After failing to play in UNC’s win against Virginia last Thursday due to suspension, sophomore forward Xylina McDaniel leads the Tar Heels with 10 points.
