Best internet memes of 2015

As 2015 comes to a close, it’s about time for us all to look back and reflect on the three most important things we have in our lives: friends, family and internet culture.

This year was a wild one for the online world, particularly because memes stopped being enjoyed ironically and somehow managed to become truly loved and appreciated by everyone.

To all my fellow slaves to the Internet: prepare to get misty-eyed and nostalgic as we take a look at some of the best memes of 2015.

Left Shark

Super Bowl XLIX featured the Patriots kicking Seahawk butt and a particularly interesting halftime performance. Missy Elliott stole the show from Katy Perry; a full-grown man in a shark costume stole the show from both of them.

The Dress

The friendships that ended over this debate were innumerable and, honestly, understandable. I was with my boyfriend at the time when this first came out, and I’m pretty sure it was one of the only arguments we had during the entirety of our relationship. Do you see it as black and blue or white and gold? (P.S. Science has spoken — it is officially black and blue.)

Iggy Azalea “Rapping”

The Vine that started the decline of Iggy’s career, if you ask me. The transcribed lyrics of the rap: “Chreekreekrah! Poomtodapahpahboom boomnochudarantiggy!”. Or something like that.

Shia LaBeouf’s “DO IT!”

Have you ever needed a year’s worth of motivation in a minute a four seconds? Well, you’ve found your answer. Though most may believe that this was just another incident of a celebrity gone wild, the video was actually part of a project called #Introductions, scripted and directed by students at Central Saint Martins, a London-based art college.

“What are thooooooose?!”

There’s a little truth in every joke, and this is the perfect one for when you love your friend but you hate their ugly fashion choices. A perfect example: in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, in the scene just before the Yule Ball, Harry walks in on Ron trying on his horrible formal robes and just so happens to say those beautiful words: WHAT ARE THOSE

John Cena

Like jump scare videos, but instead with the world’s most beloved, nearly-bald wrestler. Need I say more?

Kylie Jenner Challenge

Some thought it was dangerous; others found it controversial; I thought it was just plain weird. The Kylie Jenner challenge - in which people placed shot glasses over their mouths and sucked in to plump their lips to ridiculous sizes - resulted in a thousand ridiculous videos, as well as a thousand seriously injured mouths

Why You Always Lying Video

If I even just see an image of this guy’s face I automatically start cracking up. Why You Always Lying, a music video made by Youtube user Downgoes Frazer, was popularized on Vine and is a beyond accurate representation of how you might look when you know somebody’s story is a little too good to be true.

Drake “Hotline Bling”

Only Drake could dance like a dad and still win our hearts. Hotline Bling - which may possibly be the most aesthetically-beautiful music video of all time - inspired spin-offs, T-shirts, GIFs, and even Halloween costumes. Dearest Drizzy can call me on my cell phone anytime.

Netflix and Chill

Speaking of meme-inspired Halloween costumes, let’s all agree to never discuss — or ask anybody — to Netflix and chill ever, ever again. This was undoubtedly the most popular Internet trend of the year, and possibly the one I’d most like to see die in 2016.

Oh, you need a cute couple costume?

Oh, you’re going to be Netflix and Chill?

Wow! Real creative, friend. Real creative.
