Pit Talk

UNC campus is a ghost town during summer school

The campus is dead. Absolutely dead. With most students gone for the summer, those left behind to brave the desolate UNC campus during summer school must do so alone and afraid.

“It’s a little eerie,” said senior Maria Devlin.

The usual bustling crowds of the school year have vanished, dissappearing from campus after exams ended. The Pit is deserted save the lone student sprinting to get to a summer school class or small groups of students huddled together to withstand the harsh summer heat and the perpetual boredom. A tumbleweed blows past student stores.

How can students pass the time on a campus so completely devoid of life?

“I read alot,” said sophomore Mike Deigan. “I can pretty much just focus on my school work.”

But boosting one’s GPA alone surely can not keep a student sane during such mundane times. Reacreation is a necessity, but resources are limited. Students try to boost their moral by jogging or playing frisbee. But, these activities can’t replace the companionship of fellow students. Even the dining halls are closed and students are forced to venture out onto Franklin street for sustainance.

“It’s like when you see a city and the streets are empty,” said Devlin. “It feels like there is something wrong.”
