Students have a gay time with banned books

Many people grew up with fond memories of bedtime stories. But few have heard the stories of Earl the sissy duckling or Roy and Silo, the two gay penguins.

Thursday night in Wilson Hall, their stories and more were read at the second annual “Banned Book Story Time!” event sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Straight Alliance.

Close to 80 people attended the event dressed in an array of outfits ranging from suits to bright green, footie pajamas

“Banned Book Story Time!” is GBLTSA’s main event for First Amendment Day. During the program, students and faculty read banned stories that include queer characters or themes and enjoyed milk and cookies.

“Daddy’s Roommate” by Michael Willhoite tells the story of a young boy whose father divorced and moved in with his gay partner. The book is a narrative by the little boy, who describes how his daddy and his daddy’s roommate do everything together – shave, sleep, watch TV and go to the zoo.

In the 1990s, “Daddy’s Roommate” was second on the list of the top one hundred most challenged books because of its subject matter, said Alex Kilkka, co-president of GBLTSA.

“This book depicts gay couples just like any other couple and that’s what makes them controversial,” Kilkka said.

Cathy Packer, a journalism professor and organizer of First Amendment Day, said the event accomplished a lot at once.

“This event gives a wonderful statement about book banning,” she said.

“It’s educational and entertaining at the same time, and that’s the best thing.”
