Queer-e-okee

Oldies, country songs, rock and of course, the Backstreet Boys could be heard through the halls of the Frank Porter Graham Student Union on Thursday night.

The source of the music was the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Straight Alliance, which was holding its first “Queer-e-oke” Karaoke Contest.

Co-president and junior Billy Kluttz said he came up with the idea for the event over the summer.

“My friends and I were talking about how heterosexual most music is and if we had a night to reclaim it and let queer folk sing it,” Kluttz said.

The event was one of the first to tailor to the allies of GLBTSA, said co-president and senior Alex Kilkka.

Silly Bandz and candy, among other prizes, were given for best group number, most obnoxious song selection, best duet and the most epic performance of the event. There was also an award for favorite person.

Kluttz won the award for favorite person and his performance with junior Rick Ingram to Reba Mcentire’s “Fancy” stole the show as the most epic performance.

“We are best friends, so it came naturally,” Ingram said.

Lindsay Shirkey, a sophomore and karaoke fan, said she found out about the event from a weekly newsletter, although she didn’t want to sing at the event.

“I’m embarrassed and I don’t know anyone here,” Shirkey said. “I don’t mind performing with my friends, but in a group of strangers, I’d rather just watch.”

Kluttz and Kilkka agreed the event was a success, and are planning another for next semester.

“It can be a new tradition,” Kluttz said.
