The days are getting slightly cooler, pumpkin spice lattes have been added to the menu at Starbucks, and people are already discussing their Halloween costumes. It’s October!

There are many noteworthy events this month, so here are a couple of dates to add to your calendars.

October 12 – University Day

This is the day that UNC-Chapel Hill celebrates its founding every year. There will be a ceremony from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Memorial Hall, featuring Jamie Bartram of the UNC Water Institute as guest speaker. Perhaps more importantly, classes are cancelled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to give everyone the chance to participate in the day’s festivities.

October 15 – Last Day for Undergraduate Students to Drop a Class

If you still need to drop a class, get to the Steele building pronto. October 15 will be the last day for undergraduates to drop a class for the fall semester. If you can, try going to the “Drop Express” that Academic Advising is offering from October 1-12. From 2 to 4 p.m. students seeking to drop a class can do so without having a long talk with an advisor.

October 17-21 – Fall Break

‘Nough said. Fall break begins at 5 p.m. on October 17 and continues through the weekend. Classes resume the following Monday. Try to find some time to relax, take a break from homework, and put the finishing touches on your costume because when you get back, the Halloween countdown begins with just 10 days to go!

October 31 – Halloween

Break out your costumes and candy because it’s time to celebrate another Halloween on Franklin Street! This year, in accordance with the Town of Chapel Hill’s Homegrown Halloween, streets will be closed to cars at 9 p.m. and restaurants and bars will stop accepting new customers at 1 a.m.

Don’t let midterms and darker days get you down. Our first class break is less than two weeks away, and the best holiday to celebrate at UNC-CH will be here before you know it!
