Eight months after August’s engagement announcement, Google has finalized its purchase of Motorola Mobility. Today, Google announced it would be buying the Droid maker’s company at $40 per share.
This does great things for Google. It gives the software giant a dedicated hardware platform for Android. It’s similar to how Apple makes its products, creating the hardware around the software. Creating both the hardware and the software will allow Ice Cream Sandwich (and future versions of Android) to run at its best.
It also gives Google access to several patents. In the past two years, Google, along with Apple, Microsoft, HTC and Samsung, have claimed ownership to several patents through numerous lawsuits. These decisions allow the patent-holder to charge a fee every time a competitor uses one of their innovations. These patents are vital to profits, and Motorola gives Google tons of ammo.
Additionally, Motorola provides expertise in consumer products. Google TV has been an outstanding failure. With Motorola’s experience, Google can improve their home devices.
You can check out the press release here. Imagine if Google had bought Motorola when the first RAZR came out. Teenage me woulda loved it.
