PSA: GoDaddy.com, "millions" of emails, sites down

Buy Photos

If your GoDaddy.com email hasn’t been working today, don’t go to ITS just yet. The site is the target of a denial-of-service attack that has greatly slowed down access to millions of websites and email accounts.

Someone claiming to be part of Anonymous, an anonymous group of hackers, has taken responsibility for the attacks on Twitter, but is has yet to be determined if this is being done by more than one person. No motive for the attack has been stated, but it is important to note that Go Daddy supported SOPA last year, a move unpopular with many on the Internet. More on this story as it develops.

Update (10:13 PM): godaddy.com is working, and this message is displayed at the top of their homepage:

At 10:25 am PT, GoDaddy.com and associated customer services experienced intermittent outages. Services began to be restored for the bulk of affected customers at 2:43 pm PT. At no time was any sensitive customer information, such as credit card data, passwords or names and addresses, compromised. We will provide an additional update within the next 24 hours. We want to thank our customers for their patience and support.

Update (6:01 PM 9/12): Go Daddy CEO Scott Wagner issued a statement Tuesday saying the outage was caused by an error on their end. You can find the statement here.
