Spoiler alert: the Netflix version of House of Cards, produced by and starring Kevin Spacey, is highly entertaining. If you have Netflix, you should watch it. But when you watch it, keep in mind the characters’ behavior shows how not to act if you are working as an elected official or bureaucrat. Yes — I am about to use a fictitious show that I watched online to make a point about the way government works in reality.

We are just days away from the most expensive election cycle in history. The Center for Responsive Politics predicts the price tag for the 2012 elections for federal offices will reach $6 billion — at least $700 million more than the next most expensive election.

Since it’s debate season, we should all step back and realize who controls the debates to begin with. It should not be surprising that a debate between the two major parties, orchestrated by the two major parties, doesn’t cover all the issues that matter.

Smoking is cool, or at least that’s what “Mad Men” has taught me. Science, though, has taught me that it’s bad. The recent uproar over a proposed expansion of the county’s smoking ban got me thinking — what would Don Draper think? Wouldn’t he be sad? At what point would he justify government intervention?
