The first few weeks at college can be a confusing time for any new student, whether you are a first-year student or a transfer. Finding friends and a community to surround yourself with can be a difficult proposition.

Say this for Trump. Say that he’s exposed everyone for who they are.

“It’s ghost or be ghosted,” the front page of the DTH proclaimed last Wednesday. In addition to being absolutely nonsensical to anyone over the age of 40, the headline, and the story that accompanied it, hit upon a sad truth in modern dating culture: people are jerks and technology has made being a jerk easier.

The Republican Party is a mess.

Senior year of high school is a stressful time. The combination of difficult classes, applying for colleges, deciding if you want to continue dating a significant other, maybe working a job and a variety of other factors can make that year particularly stressful and confusing for many high school students. If, for example, you are someone who is not quite sure what college you prefer, even the process of deciding which colleges to apply to can be positively daunting.

I was 10 or 11 when I first encountered Twitter. My dad had gotten an account on a new website where people texted a number and their texts were posted to that website. Or at least that’s how I understood the whole thing (quite frankly I didn’t understand it at all). I, as a young kid fascinated with new technology, instantly asked my father for permission to get a Twitter account. He wisely denied my request.

Editor’s note: Publishing this piece was an oversight. While this column does not reflect the view of the editorial board or of most members of our newsroom, it was published in an attempt to reflect differing viewpoints on Silent Sam from UNC students.

It’s easy to forget or ignore the good qualities of someone who you are kicking out the door. Yes, Coach Larry Fedora did say some things that I disagree with, his comments about CTE being first among those issues. Yes, he did have two abysmal seasons back to back. He went from being a rising coach in the college scene to being fired for terrible performance at a school which, frankly, isn’t really a football school.

It is no secret that I am not one of our administration’s largest fans. I’ve said that they treat students more like consumers than people who are at UNC to learn. I’ve lambasted Chancellor Folt. I’ve said a whole host of other things in private.

Civil rights movements have dominated the American political and cultural landscape for some time now. Whether it is the struggle that Black Americans have gone through to attain equality or the women’s rights movement, the United States has been a battleground for equality for some time.

Voting is pretty awesome if you think about it. All you have to do is fill out a couple sheets of paper, check a few boxes and voila! You’ve helped decide what your local, state and federal government will decide to do for the next couple years.

Many of you may have never heard of Jonah Goldberg, which really is a shame. Do you enjoy dogs? How about a good scotch? What about well-reasoned argumentation and generally enlightening conversation? If you like any of these above things, you might find something in common with Goldberg — who is giving a talk at UNC next Monday.

Depending on who you speak to, modern universities have vastly different purposes. Some people view universities as a place to fund various types of research. Some see college as an investment toward engaging in a more lucrative career in the future. Some see universities as centers of knowledge and an opportunity for self-improvement.

Presumption of innocence. A cornerstone to the American legal system. Yet some want to throw it out the window.

America, and the West as a whole, has been experiencing a revival of sorts — a social movement based around the ideology of social justice. The intentions of individuals commonly described as social justice warriors, or "SJWs," are perhaps noble but have expressed themselves in an authoritarian manner.

It was not so long ago that the first revelations of scandal in the Catholic Church came to light in an investigation published by “The Boston Globe”. The abuses revealed in 2002 were horrific, almost beyond belief. The idea that those who are most trusted in a community could betray the faith placed upon them in such a manner is nearly unthinkable. It is with a heavy heart, then, that I have watched as new revelations about the sexual abuse and manipulation of both minors and young men came to the surface recently. I had respected Pope Francis for the way that he cared about his charges — or seemingly cared.

Diversity: the word that best defines our current social climate. Wherever one might look, training, requirements and conversations about diversity dominate every bit of attention the American public has to offer. This emphasis has originated from modern universities, who are criticized as breeding grounds for social justice theory. And to the extent that such accusations are true, UNC is no exception.

Silent Sam should have never gone up, let’s make that clear.

This quote is taken from the Chicago Statement on Principles of Free Expression, a statement whose values UNC has agreed with and affirmed. And, quite frankly, it is the perfect response to whomever placed this particular sticker here.
