Little-Known Library Offers Scholarship Help

A lot of people may not know it, but there's a library located on the second floor of Pettigrew Hall. And though its collection may not be as extensive as Davis Library's or its exterior as impressive as Wilson Library's, the Scholarship Resource Center located in Pettigrew offers a wealth of information for anyone who wants to learn more about outside scholarship options.

Stalkers Spend Time, Energy to Secure Cube Space

Call the people stoically sitting beside the Cube in the Pit whatever you want -- stalkers, guards or baby sitters -- but don't ask them to give up their spots. Positioned at the heart of campus, its base surrounded by paint-splattered bricks almost as colorful as the structure itself, the Cube is hard to miss. Its visibility makes its sides highly coveted by student organizations seeking to publicize upcoming events on campus. According to Student Union policy, publicizing on the wooden structure works on a first-come, first-serve basis.

UNC to Help Staff Stretch Salaries With New Homes

A one-bedroom apartment in Chapel Hill. A three-bedroom place in nearby Hillsborough. Which costs more? If you guessed the flat in Hillsborough, you're wrong, a fact UNC employee Yvette Harris learned first hand when she began searching for housing in the area last summer. A cashier at Lenoir Dining Hall since July, Harris and her husband first looked into renting a place in Chapel Hill but quickly found the high prices to be a rude awakening.

Professor a Key Player in Music Department

Many people take piano lessons and progress quite nicely, maybe even performing in a few local recitals. Others can never quite make it past pounding out "Chopsticks." And then there are the cases like pianist and new UNC music Professor Thomas Otten, who began taking lessons when he was 10 years old and who, by age 17, won a national competition to play with the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Location, Hard Work Draw Businesses, Brains to RTP

Where pine trees once stood, there are now gated multimillion-dollar corporations. Where tobacco once grew, major pharmaceutical companies now do research on everything from Alzheimer's disease to lung cancer. And where cows once grazed, there are now row after row of full parking decks. Research Triangle Park, between Chapel Hill and Raleigh, is home to 140 technology- and research-oriented companies.
