Frey was arrested Monday and charged with a Class 2 misdemeanor for trespassing. Chapel Hill has received 46 reports regarding Frey’s behavior since August 2020, and seven emails in the past week alone, Attorney Maren Hardin said during Frey's first appearance in court on Wednesday.
House Bill 2, which would make bottlenose dolphins the North Carolina's first state marine mammal, passed the House unanimously and is waiting for a Senate decision. The bill cites bottlenose dolphins' abundance, athleticism, social habits and appearance for making the animal N.C.'s official marine mammal.
The coalition and call for change came in response to several years of a constant decline in state school funding, ranking N.C. as one of the lowest in the country in terms of school funding and equity.
“These are my people and my country that are dying,” Gan Poo, a Burmese-American who participated in the March 6 Chapel Hill protest, said. “My family is back there, and we want to help save them.”
Existing language and technology barriers exacerbate the difficulties local refugee and immigrant families face with tasks like helping children in online school and applying for unemployment.
N.C. legislators filed a bill on Feb. 10 to make Holocaust and genocide education mandatory for public schools, but Durham minister and activist Paul Scott is demanding the bill also include Black history.
“We are responsible for school and community climate," board member Jennifer Moore said. "We are having to address issues of inequity because our predecessors did not.”
Theodore Roosevelt Cole Jr. was killed in 1969 on the day of his promotional ceremony to become Chapel Hill’s first Black detective.
The project was formed partly because of rising incarceration rates in women’s facilities. In the past 40 years, the number of incarcerated women has increased by more than 700 percent.
