Columnist Laments Columns Lost

As some crazy hippie dude named Jim once said, and I think this was right before that fateful bathroom experience, "This is the end." Assuming I pass my Spanish class, an assumption that I don't feel totally safe in making right now, I'm out of here. Last column for the The Daily Tar Heel, last classes at Carolina, last days on Franklin as a Chapel Hill resident. The End.

How Church Once `Saved' My Life

My 3-year-old niece has a doll named Baby Jesus. I am both horrified and curious about this name. While I?m not the most theologically inclined person in the world, I can?t help but wonder if there isn?t some religious rule somewhere that prevents the naming of a plastic doll after part of the Holy Trinity. I am worried that at age three my niece may have already committed some unspeakable blasphemy, and that by the time she?s five there might be a plague of frogs on her house or a pox on her teddy bears.

Every Generation Makes Mistakes

n BILL HILL STREET NAME = GRAPPA BOY Every Generation Makes Mistakes In his new book, Balsamic Dreams, author Joe Queenan describes the baby boomers as "stupefyingly self-centered, unbelievably rude, obnoxious beyond belief, and ... everywhere." He carries on like this for the entirety of the book, more than 200 pages of insults and insights into the most wasteful generation in history. Some may find the excoriation of the boomers as funny as I did. Others, particularly if you're a male of more than 50 years who has an earring and a ponytail, might be offended.

DeCSS Ruling Threatens Freedom

Screw the First Amendment. So long, soapbox speeches on the town square. Farewell, petitioners of the government. Adios, freedom of the press. Barbecue Fanatics Flock to Hog Day

Even without the hogs, Hillsborough's 19th-annual Hog Day Festival opened the gates to hog heaven for its participants. On Saturday morning, the paths at the annual fair were swarming with people as crafts vendors and food stands hawked their wares in the hot June sun. The crowds ambled between the vendor's tents, sipping fresh-squeezed lemonade and munching on homemade potato chips, onion blossoms and the main attraction - local barbecue. Thirty-seven teams cooked more than 9,000 pounds of pork on Friday night in preparation for the estimated crowd of more than 48,000 people.

FBI Needs to Get Its Act Together

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been in the news a lot recently. First was the bad news that one of the FBI's very own agents, Robert Hanssen, had spied for the Soviet Union for over 15 years. Then came the real bombshell: turns out that the FBI ignored a court order to turn over all of its documents in the Timothy McVeigh case, withholding thousands of pages of evidence from the defense. Here was a guy who had blown up a building in broad daylight and then confessed to his crime in a national bestseller. Yet unbelievably, the FBI managed to mess things up.

Weezer Returns with Short But Catchy Release

Thank God Weezer is back. So much of what passes for music these days sucks - Britney Spears, N'Sync, and even formerly cool bands like the Foo Fighters have become the 90's version of bad-'80s hair bands. Not so with Weezer. Their new album, Weezer, not to be confused with their first album by the same name, has enough guitar riffs and wholesome pop goodness for any music lover.

Court's Stance on Partial-Birth Abortion Based on Constitution

Students and members of the University community should welcome and encourage, for both debate and discussion, a broad range of ideas and opinions. Among the "hot button" issues, few have sparked as much controversy as abortion. As a man, I believe that I have no right to dictate to the women of America how to use their bodies. At the same time, I understand many disagree with this position, and I accept and appreciate their views. However, proponents on both sides of the debate do their position a disservice when they stoop to empty and inflammatory political rhetoric and name-calling.
