Revaluation legality unsure

Orange County commissioners are waiting on a definitive answer on the legality of rescinding last year's property revaluations. Legal experts say the answer isn't clear though other N.C. counties threw out property revaluations earlier this year.

The long walk home

As school ends at Phillips Middle School every day several students have to cross the street to reach a sidewalk on their walk home. Both Phillips and Estes Hills Elementary Schools are located on one side of busy Estes Drive. And crossing guard Rob Jewett said sometimes the road is less than completely safe.

Ban to delay land_¶ ll _¶ ll-up

Orange County's ban on the disposal of residential corrugated cardboard at its landfill is one attempt to prevent the landfill from filling before county officials can build a transfer station. The landfill is projected to reach its capacity by May 2011 and currently there is no other waste disposal site for the county.

BOCC prioritizes projects reviews county funds

The struggling economy's strain on the budget was highlighted during discussions surrounding the county's capital investment plan Thursday at an Orange County Board of Commissioners meeting. The board reviewed many of the county's funded projects prioritizing them and looking at the budget's increase in the previous year. The county has nearly $19 million in unfunded needs. Commissioner Alice Gordon expressed concerns for limiting the budget.

Board to review Elem. 11 plans

For Thomas Merritt" a new school in the Northside neighborhood would be an asset to his community. ""It would sort of put the community back in play"" said Merritt, who has lived in the neighborhood for 52 years. It will help people get into school and learn something.

Town hopes to pro_¶ t from Festifall event

Craft vendors will set up to serve thousands on West Franklin Street as people come to ""Discover the West End"" during the 36th annual Festifall Street Fair on Sunday. But organizers think that business owners could be the real winners. Restaurants will offer lunch and dinner specials" and some will offer live entertainment during and after Festifall" which runs from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
