Ready to roll

Believe it or not, there was a time when roller skating was cool. Watching the Carolina Rollergirls in action, that time seems like only yesterday. The Carolina Rollergirls is a Raleigh-based league of two female-only roller derby teams. The Rollergirls kicked off its third season Sunday night with an victory against the Minnesota RollerGirls, 136-126. And many of the original team members are beginning to notice an increase in the sport's popularity. "Since just our last bout, we've probably doubled in size," says Leigh Salmon, a member since the league's beginning.

New TTA service reroutes traffic

A kickoff celebration today will highlight the collaborative efforts of the Triangle Transit Authority and Orange Public Transportation to offer a new transit service between Hillsborough and Chapel Hill. The event will be held at 8:15 a.m. at the Triangle Sportsplex in Hillsborough and will be held in honor of TTA's decision to provide free rides along TTA Route 420 starting today and lasting through Jan. 20.

Fraternity slapped with list of violations

A late-night police raid last week on St. Anthony Hall, a literature and arts fraternity, netted 18 arrests and 27 drug and alcohol charges in connection with the operation of an illegal bar. N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement officials raided the house, located at 207 Pittsboro St., after they were tipped off about the bar. ALE Agent Mike Penland said the agency began a surveillance of the house after receiving an anonymous tip that fraternity members were selling alcohol without a valid permit.
