Back in the swing of things

After weeks of practice in anticipation of defending its 2007 national title, the North Carolina field hockey team got a shot in the arm Saturday. Teammates welcomed back former midfielder/forward Jesse Gey, who is serving as an undergraduate assistant this season, and midfielder Katelyn Falgowski. Both arrived home from Beijing after competing with Team USA. But even since returning this past weekend, Falgowski and Gey have been absent from preseason practices.

I can't believe Dennis Rodman never did this

Remember in high school when that referee with the pot belly and the glasses thicker than your biology textbook swallowed his whistle on a foul in the game's most important moment? Do you remember what you wanted to do to that stupid zebra? I'm sure the litany of typical reactions crossed your mind. Maybe you'd throw something. Perhaps you'd go through a five-minute, profanity-laced tirade in the locker room. Either would have been perfectly acceptable modes of steam-blowing. But how about round housing the dude's bifocals right off of his Porky Pig face?

Tar Heels take on Beijing

CORRECTION: Due to a reporting error, this story incorrectly states the score of the 7th place game in women's field hockey at the Olympics. Spain defeated the United States 3-2. The Daily Tar Heel apologizes for the error. Athletes spend their entire lives striving for the top. For some, that means dreams of the NBA, the NFL or Major League Baseball. But for the majority of world-class athletes, the top is one thing and one thing only-. The Olympics.

Tar Heel golfers take on amateur champs

When North Carolina sophomore golfer Kevin O'Connell was taking golf lessons at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club as a child, little did he know that the course would one day bring him to the pinnacle of amateur golf. O'Connell, 2007-2008 ACC Freshman of the Year and Third Team All-America, finished just ahead of the cut in Tuesday's final round of stroke play. He joined recently graduated senior Barden Berry as one of two Tar Heels to make the cut. Berry had more rounds of par or better than anyone on UNC's team last year - other than O'Connell.

Hits title no big deal for Flack

Last summer, former Tar Heel shortstop Chad Prosser and current third baseman Chad Flack - UNC's all-time hit king - worked together at North Carolina's baseball camp. The two had met before. Prosser was a camp counselor at UNC when Flack was in high school, but 2007 was the first time they really got to know each other. Flack was able to learn a little bit about life in pro baseball - Prosser had just finished his third year in the Houston Astros' minor league system. And he got to see yet another Tar Heel striving for success.

Bats awaken for Tar Heels

CARY - For nearly six innings Wednesday night, it looked like more of the same for the North Carolina baseball team. The Tar Heels, who had only scored one run in their last 18 innings, were held scoreless by N.C. A&T through 5.1 innings, registering just three hits and striking out five times along the way. "Our guys just weren't getting much done," UNC coach Mike Fox said. "The thing you've got to fight in that atmosphere is not to start feeling too much pressure."

Tar Heels prep for series against 'Pack

About 25 miles separate UNC's Boshamer Stadium and N.C. State's Doak Field. And right in between them is the USA National Baseball Training Complex - where the two clubs will meet this weekend. But despite the geographically neutral site, the Tar Heels will surely not be surrendering the home whites. "We've been playing and practicing there, and from a fan's standpoint we certainly hope there's some Carolina fans," UNC coach Mike Fox said Thursday. "We expect it to be that way."

Big bats for Tar Heels key in win against 'Cats

CARY - A third consecutive impressive showing from the North Carolina bats covered up any shortcomings on the mound Tuesday night against Davidson. The Tar Heels (19-4) rolled to an early 7-0 lead thanks to a five-run second inning highlighted by a three-run homer by Garrett Gore. UNC led by at least six runs the rest of the way, earning a 12-6 win. After Davidson (7-13) mounted a small rally in the ninth inning, the UNC victory ended with the rarely successful appeal to third base.

UNC falls to Terps in ACC play

Between the third and fourth quarters of the No. 4 North Carolina men's lacrosse team's home game against the Terrapins of Maryland, a cheer broke out. "T-E-R-P-S! TERPS! TERPS! TERPS!" With the visiting fans challenging them, the Tar Heel faithful decided it was time to answer. "Tar - Heels - Tar - Heels" was about all they could muster. That - even more so than UNC's 12 turnovers and 53 percent success rate on clears - epitomized North Carolina's 13-8 loss that kept the Tar Heels (6-2, 0-2 ACC) from picking up their first conference win.
