Student Rates Hit New Low

The interest rate for federally regulated student loans is at its lowest level ever, according to education loan providers, and many UNC students could potentially benefit. The 2001-02 rate was fixed at its lowest level since 1965, when the Higher Education Act first introduced education loans, said Jeff Hanson, the director of debt management services at Access Group, Inc. The interest rate is 5.39 percent for a standard Stafford loan for students who are still in school, compared to 7.59 percent just a year ago. "We are in a somewhat unique situation right now," Hanson said.

Clark Concert Kicks Off Series

Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts celebrated their front man's 65th birthday June 21 with a concert at McCorkle Place. The concert was part of a family-oriented "Thursday Rock" program, occurring until Aug. 9 and sponsored by Chapel Hill Downtown Commission. It is the first of three summer concerts to be held in the downtown area. For tonight's installment of the program, the Ackland Art Museum is open until 9 p.m. with its "Linda McCartney's Sixties: Portrait of an Era" exhibit. And a movie, "That Thing You Do," will be shown at 9 p.m. at James C.

BOG Quota Policy May Be Revised

The UNC Board of Governors decided Friday that they will not fight a lawsuit challenging a diversity quota system. They also called on the General Assembly to eliminate a current statute governing the election of BOG members. The lawsuit, served May 30, claims that it is unconstitutional to set aside seats at the Board of Governors for specified groups of people. The quota system has allegedly prevented some of the plaintiffs from becoming members of the BOG.
