Talk centers on women, war

A UNC alumna delivered a speech Monday on women and war, saying they face particular vulnerabilities in war-torn areas. Pamela DeLargy, head of the Humanitarian Assistance Unit of the U.N. Population Fund, addressed a crowd of about 35 people, speaking on the gender-specific issues women face in war-torn countries. Her speech topped off the “Series on War and Health” lectures at the University.

Bill might award tax credit to energy-efficent homes

Two members of the N.C. General Assembly are pushing legislation that would reward taxpayers for making their homes more eco-friendly. Sens. Hamilton Horton Jr., R-Forsyth, and Ellie Kinnaird, D-Orange, have filed a bill that would provide an income tax credit to those who build energy-efficient homes or modify their existing homes to meet certain standards. “This bill gives people an extra incentive to make their homes more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly,” Horton said.

Poll: Social Security lacks N.C. support

Many North Carolina residents are not in line with President Bush’s proposed Social Security reforms, a new Elon University poll shows. The statewide telephone poll, administered to 544 adults chosen at random, states that 46 percent of respondents “disapprove” or “strongly disapprove” of Bush’s proposed changes to Social Security. This information might come as a surprise, given the fact that Bush carried the state by a comfortable 12-point margin last November.

Decision stems tide of hikes

In-state freshmen enrolled in UNC-Chapel Hill during the fall of 2001 paid $2,328 for tuition. Three and a half years later, these seniors are paying $3,205 for the same education. And the cost of tuition has skyrocketed across the UNC system during the last four years.
