Since Dec. 1, the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services' Low-Income Energy Assistance Program has been accepting priority applications for people aged 60 or older and disabled persons who receive services through its Aging and Adult Services division.
Darien Cropper, the marketing and communications coordinator for Chapel Hill Community Arts & Culture, said the decision to remove cars in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Community Holiday Parade was based on public safety and environmental stewardship.
“They are reimagining the way we look at policing, especially policing for people with behavioral health issues, and we should be proud as a community in Chapel Hill that we have a program that others around the country and the state are looking to implement themselves,” Orange County Criminal Justice Resource Department Director Caitlin Fenhagen said.
Dr. Susan Kansagra, the NCDHHS assistant secretary for public health, said at this time of year, respiratory illness cases often rise because the weather is getting colder and people are spending more time indoors. She also said the NCDHHS is keeping a close eye on metrics and emergency department visits to ensure North Carolina has the capacity to handle the winter increase.
The N.C. Land and Water Fund Board of Trustees met to award $45 million of grants — out of $98 million in requests — for projects that work to protect North Carolina’s land and water. This grant cycle will likely protect nearly 17,000 acres of land in North Carolina.
N.C. Sen. Sydney Batch (D-Wake), a breast cancer survivor, asked Gov. Roy Cooper to organize the roundtable discussion to help push the legislation H.B. 560 — which would require private insurers to cover diagnostic or supplemental exams for breast cancer on the same cost-sharing terms as screening mammography.
Jeff McNeill began his role as the new Orange County Veterans Services Officer on Aug. 14. Under social services supervisor Suzanne Hitt, McNeill will focus on outreach to and service for veterans in Orange County.

The planning of Orange County's crisis diversion facility, which would provide services for people experiencing mental or behavioral health crises, was given $2 million in the new 2023-24 fiscal year budget.
To celebrate Women’s History Month, Chapel Hill Community Arts & Culture selected Janvika Shah to create a piece of art for a bus shelter on South Road on UNC’s campus. With her illustration, which depicts a variety of women, Shah hoped to uplift marginalized identities.
