IFC site option draws local ire

The Inter-Faith Council for Social Service seems to face opposition from residents everywhere it goes in its search for a new site. When the IFC announced a newly proposed site off Eubanks Road on Feb. 2, Rick Kennedy was among its most vocal opponents. Kennedy, who lives on Blackwood Mountain Road near the site, claims that the new proposal is hypocritical, saying the town of Chapel Hill has an "out of sight, out of mind" policy toward the area he calls home.

Leaders want to nuke

In light of the announcement that the area's largest nuclear power plant plans to expand, residents and community leaders soon might be galvanized in opposition to the nuclear plant - again. The expansion will allow for the addition of a second nuclear reactor at Shearon Harris, located near Raleigh, southeast of Chapel Hill. Though the application process for the license needed to expand could take up to two years to complete, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen is ready to fight the plans.
