Column: A new coalition for change

“The decade that changed the world” reads the dramatic tagline to TV’s latest take on the times that were a-changin’: “The Sixties” on CNN. The period has been all but strip-mined for its memories, but despite the number of times the American media have revisited it, the ‘60s have yet to become a stale sell.

Our online echo chambers

While the Super Bowl may be over, the high-cost television advertising that accompanied it is back once more with the start of the Olympics. I’m not much of a TV guy, but it was hard to miss one particular ad that’s sent large ripples across social media: Coca-Cola’s newest commercial, “It’s Beautiful.” The ad went viral on Facebook and Twitter during and after the Super Bowl for its musical choice of “America the Beautiful” sung in a variety of languages, and I have to guess I’m not the only college student who found it repeatedly popping up on his news feed for days.

The networks that make us

We like stories with heroes and heroines who lead, succeed and inspire. There’s a natural appeal to seeing individuals overcome their environment, whether real or fictitious. Their ultimate success reminds us of the same agency we have to direct our own lives upwards. The shining moment of their success can be so bright, in fact, that it can blur what came before their fame.

Living this page in history

Like many students, I was born in 1992, a year of turning points for history. Yugoslavia began to dissolve, “The Silence of the Lambs” became the first horror film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture and a Canadian baseball team won the World Series. Most famously perhaps, it was the year that brought the formal end of the Cold War.
