N.C. House and Senate bills could establish contaminant levels for drinking water

Collectively titled the 2023 Safe Drinking Water Act, N.C. Senate Bill 350 and House Bill 610 were filed on March 22 and April 13, respectively. If passed, they would mandate that the N.C. Commission for Public Health must establish maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for toxins in drinking water that are probable or known carcinogens or are otherwise toxic.

Music stores in Chapel Hill and Carrboro celebrate national Record Store Day

Local record stores celebrated Record Store Day on Saturday with exclusive new vinyl releases and musical performances. Record Store Day is an annual event that honors the people who make up record stores' unique culture, including staff, consumers and artists.

NC General Assembly overrides Cooper's veto on bill repealing pistol purchase permits

The N.C. Senate voted to override Gov. Roy Cooper's S.B. 14 with a 30-19 vote on March 28, repealing the requirement to obtain a permit from a local sheriff before purchasing a handgun.

Carrboro hires Marie Parker as new assistant town manager after national search

Marie Parker, the executive director of Wave Transit, has been selected as Carrboro’s new assistant town manager. Parker is set to start on June 5 and will work alongside Town Manager Richard J. White III and Chief Race and Equity Officer Anita Jones-McNair in the Carrboro Town Manager’s Office.

Duke Energy developing its second carbon plan to implement energy transition

Duke Energy is developing a second carbon plan only two months after the release of the first, according to Duke Energy spokesperson Bill Norton. The company's original plan — the Carolinas Carbon Plan — detailed Duke Energy's planned methods for implementing North Carolina’s energy transition, which is mandated by House Bill 951.

New shopping center under development on US 15-501, despite controversy

A new shopping center is in development along U.S. Highway 15-501, south of Chapel Hill and on track to open this summer. The development, 501 Landing, is located across from the Chatham Downs Shopping Center and is being developed for retail, medical and office use by BOLD Development.
