The Right to Be Heard, No Matter What

Fred Hashagen and Michael Woods are right. David Horowitz is coming to UNC on Wednesday. But they are wrong to say that Horowitz's presence here will be "harmful and divisive." I don't agree with Horowitz's views, and, like Woods and Hashagen, his column on reparations that ran in The Daily Tar Heel last April made my skin crawl. But this is not a time to protest but to listen to the man for yourselves.

Choosing The Right Senior Class Gift

Six UNC alumni have been confirmed dead after the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center -- not to mention the many other nameless UNC friends and family who have not yet been confirmed. Each one of us has a connection to these people -- it might not be by blood or acquaintance, but it's still strong. My senior year has been tainted with evil and the present reality of war. Things that I might have felt were very important before are not nearly as pressing now.

Student Input -- Integral to Paper KATE HARTIG EDITORIAL PAGE EDITOR I always thought that The Daily Tar Heel did a real good job of pissing people off. Before I started working at the DTH, I felt like I read biting letters to the editor almost every day, where a student, a faculty member or a resident would spout off about how offended they were by something that was in the paper. You'd think that by now, two weeks into the school year -- something we have published would have incited an decent flow of bickering letters into our office.
