Play to bring magic to stage

While PlayMakers Repertory Company won't have to use magic to enthrall audiences with "The Illusion," a bit of enchantment is still somewhere to be found. The play, which examines the power of fantasy and love, will premiere at 8 p.m. today. The show concludes PlayMakers' 2006-07 season and will run through May 6. Originally written in the 17th century by Pierre Corneille as "L'Illusion Comique," the production was adapted by Tony Kushner, who won the Pulitzer Prize for the universally acclaimed "Angels in America."

Children called back for 'Oliver!' auditions

Choruses of "Oliver! Oliver! Never before has a boy wanted more!" rang out in the Center for Dramatic Art where children's callback auditions for "Oliver!" were held Sunday. The production of "Oliver!" is part of the Carrboro ArtsCenter's Summer Youth Conservatory Program, in which children ages 8-18 learn to act and perform in a real play. In partnership with PlayMakers Repertory Company, the conservatory offers area children a chance to act in a professional environment.

Five alive and making music

United by their love for music, five UNC professors will take the stage tonight for their debut at the renovated Memorial Hall. The Carolina Wind Quintet features Brooks de Wetter-Smith on flute, Michael Schultz on oboe, Donald Oehler on clarinet, John Pederson on bassoon and Andrew McAfee on French horn. Accompanying the quintet on piano is professor Mayron Tsong. The quintet formed in 1973 when Oehler and Pederson began practicing together. Since then, the group has weathered changes in its lineup while remaining an established musical presence on and off campus.

Exhibit gives abstract insight

Bold splashes of color and thick drips of paint adorn the canvases in the Student Union Art Gallery, where local abstract artist Doug Stuber's work is displayed. The exhibit, which began Nov. 18, will run until Dec. 15. A closing reception will be held Dec. 7, the time for which will be announced at a later date. Christy Bisanar, art gallery chairwoman of the Carolina Union Activities Board, discovered Stuber's artwork at Carrboro's Sizl Gallery. She said she chose his work to be displayed because of its eye-catching quality.

Opera set for Memorial Hall stage

Although Mozart has been dead for more than 200 years, his comedic opera "Cosi Fan Tutte" will be brought to life when it premieres tonight in Memorial Hall. "Cosi Fan Tutte" juxtaposes classical opera with the ageless themes of love and tempting fate. Its translation can be interpreted differently, though. It can either mean "They're All Like That," referring to the opera's characters, or "The School for Lovers," a translation director Terry Rhodes prefers. Rhodes, a professor of music at UNC, said the play serves as a reflection of life.

Workshop to teach nap skills

Ever wanted to wake up from a nap without feeling like you have been hit by a truck? Or watch that kid from your comparative lit class be hypnotized and act like a duck onstage? Tom DeLuca, hypnotist and power-napping expert, will present a power-napping workshop at 3 p.m. today for the first 25 participants who sign up. He also will perform a live hypnosis show at 7 p.m. today in Memorial Hall for free. Carolina Union Activities Board officials, who were responsible for booking DeLuca last year, said they were excited to see him return this semester.

Student 'Rent' tickets sell out

Hundreds of students lined up eagerly in front of the Memorial Hall box office Monday morning to snag tickets for the Broadway hit "Rent," set to hit the recently renovated stage Jan. 29 and 30. Within a few hours of the box office opening at 10 a.m., the 800 student seats reserved for both nights of the production sold out, much to the chagrin of students who did not receive the $10 tickets. Officials are bringing "Rent" to the Memorial Hall stage as part of the Carolina Performing Arts series, and it was selected, in part, because of its edgy subject matter.

Carrboro festival offers music for the masses

What first began as an ambitious effort between a few individuals to share their love for music has grown into the Carrboro Music Festival. The festival, which runs from 1 p.m. until midnight Sunday, will be held at various sites along Main, Weaver and Greensboro streets. Gerry Williams, event coordinator for the festival, estimates that 10,000 people will attend this year's free, all-day festival. Due to the interest generated by the past eight festivals, an increasingly large amount of artists, ranging from hip-hop and punk to jazz and country, applied this year.
