Schools worried about mumps

The Orange County Health Department is investigating three suspected cases of mumps among students in three different schools in Orange County. Donna King, public information officer for the health department, said tests confirming the cases at the two elementary schools and a high school will be completed in two to three weeks. "What we are experiencing right now is not unusual for our county because we average one to two cases of mumps a year," King said. Mumps is a viral infection that is spread through contact with infected saliva.

Votes trickling in

Early voting began last week for the May 2 primaries, but so far only 31 people have cast ballots. Voting began in Orange County on April 13 and will continue until April 29. Voting begins in Chapel Hill and Carrboro on Monday. Carolyn Cates, director of the Orange County Board of Elections, said voting begins later in the towns because turnout typically is slower the first week and because new voting machines still are being tested.

Kindergartners wear many hats in 'Bunny Ville'

The doctors crowded around their patient, gave her several shots, let her lie down for a moment, then pronounced her well and requested payment. "One bunny buck, please," the doctors said. These were no ordinary doctors - they were kindergartners at McDougle Elementary School whose classrooms were transformed Thursday morning into Bunny Ville, a busy marketplace with businesses ranging from a hospital to a flower shop. The only currency accepted in Bunny Ville is bunny bucks, stacks of which were provided for the three classrooms full of participating visitors.

Leaders lament '04 Bush 'theft'

Mark Crispin Miller says the 2004 election of George Bush was a miracle, and that worries him. Miller, author of "Fooled Again: How the Right Stole the 2004 Election & Why They'll Steal the Next One, Too (Unless We Stop Them)" spoke at an election forum Tuesday night in the Great Hall. The forum, co-sponsored by the Orange County Democratic Party and the UNC Young Democrats, featured Miller, as well as David Allen of blackboxvoting.com and Ferrel Guillory, director of the UNC's Program on Southern Politics, Media and Public Life.
