Elders Praises Planned Parenthood

Former U.S. Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders congratulated the Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina on Monday on "Twenty Years of 'Yes'" but said the fight is not near over. Elders, along with Gloria Feldt, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc., spoke to about 300 of the organization's volunteers and supporters in the George Watts Hill Alumni Center. Both speeches carried the same message -- planning and education are essential to relieving the country of its major health problems.

OWASA Officials Make Pitch for Conservation

In the midst of the worst drought in recent area history, conservation efforts must be stepped up to prevent further restrictions, University and Orange Water and Sewer Authority officials said Wednesday. During a drought forum hosted by the School of Public Health, panel members spoke to more than 40 students, faculty and community members in the Rosenau Hall Auditorium.

Continuing the supplemental programs to the controversial summer reading program, a UNC professor discussed another side of Islam at a speech Monday night. Professor Ed Curtis, from the Department of Religious Studies, spoke on the origins of black Islam before about 30 students, faculty and community members in the Union Auditorium.

Student Congress Thanks Legislators

Student Congress leaders hand-delivered a resolution Wednesday expressing their gratitude to members of the N.C. General Assembly. Speaker of Student Congress Tony Larson traveled to Raleigh to deliver the resolution, passed Tuesday night, thanking legislators for keeping budget cuts to a minimum. The recently approved $14.3 billion budget includes cuts of $50 million from the UNC system, a number significantly smaller than what many University officials anticipated. Last spring, UNC-Chapel Hill began preparing for budget cuts of up to 5 percent.

U.N. Official Explains Group's Role

A high-ranking U.N. official said Monday that the organization is more than just a large bureaucracy but is instead involved directly in everyday life. Shashi Tharoor, undersecretary general for communications and public information of the United Nations, defended the importance of the United Nations while addressing its role today, especially in relation to the recent terrorist attacks and a possible future conflict with Iraq. Films to Focus on African Diaspora

The Sonja Haynes Stone Black Cultural Center kicks off the Diaspora Festival of Independent Black Films today. The first film -- "Daresalam," the story of civil war in Chad -- of the yearlong series will be shown at 7 p.m. in Student Union 208-209. The series will highlight the African diaspora -- the spread of African people and their cultures around the globe -- through monthly film showings, followed by a discussion of the themes presented. Each film is free and open to the public.

More Hours, Space for ATN

Academic Technology & Networks has moved out of Wilson Library and into its new home in the basement of the Undergraduate Library. ATN officially reopened in its new site Aug. 22, just days after the renovated Undergrad was dedicated. Because of its new location in the 24-hour Undergrad, ATN is now able to offer extended hours to students and faculty. Monday through Thursday the walk-in response center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays the center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday hours are 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Student Leaders Connect at Outdoor Retreat

Ten members of student government, led by Student Body President Jen Daum, spent the weekend hiking, rappelling and bonding. Daum and her colleagues left Chapel Hill on Wednesday night and traveled to Brevard for the weekend. The retreat was held in the Appalachian mountains at North Carolina Outward Bound, a destination first chosen by former Student Body President Justin Young. During the retreat, participants focused on learning how to communicate and cooperate successfully with one another.
