Armed with love

In support of those struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide, millions of people around the world will have the word “love” emblazoned on their arms today.It’s part of a movement sponsored by the nonprofit organization To Write Love on Her Arms, which has inspired numerous UNC students to participate.

Rowe to comfort relatives of young patients

Senior Desmond Rowe, who is a co-chairman of Carolina Fever and an active member of Dance Marathon and Carolina Kickoff, hopes to add another accolade and activity to extensive list.Rowe is running for UNC’s 2009 Homecoming king, which involves much more than simply winning a royal title. Running for Homecoming king requires the creation of a unique service project that the winner will implement in the spring with an award of $1,000.If Rowe wins, he will start the Caring and Active Relief Through Athletics and Community organization next semester.

Redmond plans to fund weekly cooking classes

Ronald Redmond is cooking up the idea for his service project as one of UNC’s candidates for 2009 Homecoming king.The senior plans to work with The Arc of Orange County, a program in Durham that provides weekly cooking classes and other opportunities to students with developmental delays.Redmond said one of his favorite aspects of the cooking program is that it donates once a month to Meals on Wheels Association of America.“It shows that even though these students have various disabilities, they still give back to the community,” he said.

New site covers student sports

In early October, The Daily Tar Heel teamed up with UNC Campus Recreation and the CommunitySportsDesk company to form DTH Campus Rec Report, UNC’s first online college social networking Web site for club and intramural sports.While at a trade show in February, Kevin Schwartz, general manager of The Daily Tar Heel, met with CommunitySportsDesk and fleshed out his idea of online self-reporting for underrepresented intramural and club sports.

Burned student still recovering

Junior Andrew Madlon felt like most UNC students last year after the men’s basketball victory against Villanova in the Final Four: elated, excited and ready to celebrate on Franklin Street.But Madlon came away with what he described as the worst memory of his college years. He fell into a fire that inflicted second- and third-degree burns to about five inches of his right arm.

Eating disorders in the spotlight

A year ago, freshman Kat Norcutt only ate salads with particular toppings. Beans and peppers were acceptable. A little bit of oil could be added, but not enough to saturate her food with calories.Norcutt, who considers herself recovered from an eating disorder, started having problems with food her junior year of high school. They have followed her all the way to UNC.According to a poll taken by the National Eating Disorders Association in 2006, nearly 20 percent of students on college campuses in America admit to having an eating disorder.
