Expectations and funding for schools hinders rural students

Recently, I took my roommate home with me. We drove the five hours across North Carolina, through curvy mountain roads to my hometown in the western part of our state. I spent the weekend driving on back roads, showing her my rural hometown. At one point on my tour she remarked, “So, it was a big deal freshman year when you came to Chapel Hill.”

Students frequent Sporcle

As UNC awaits Wednesday’s matchup against Duke University, students can already take pride in one victory: its ranking. On Sporcle, that is. A few months ago, Sporcle began compiling data on colleges’ use of the site, creating a top 25 ranking of worldwide schools.

Educators compare Sakai, Blackboard systems

Despite UNC’s commitment to switch from Blackboard to Sakai by 2014, announced Oct. 18, some professors and teaching assistants don’t see it as a clear favorite. Some educators said they preferred Blackboard, while some who have tried the Sakai program think several factors make it easier to use.

Davis Library construction to end Friday

The maze of fences and yellow caution tape outside Davis Library might soon become a thing of the past. Roof construction should be completed on schedule Friday, said Julie Thurston, a structural engineer in the design and construction services department.
