NCSU Modi_es Employee Purchasing Program

N.C. State University has instituted several changes to its employee credit card purchasing program after an investigation into mismanaged funds at the university.An internal audit found some former employees still had access to university credit cards and used those cards to make nearly $170,000 in purchases that were not properly documented.Dennis Patterson, state audit publications coordinator, said N.C. auditor Ralph Campbell recommended an audit of the credit card purchasing program after last summer's financial fiasco in N.C.

Taping Could Improve Access

A bill recently introduced in the N.C. House of Representatives would entitle the public to video or audio transcripts of closed meetings of the public bodies in North Carolina.On Tuesday, Rep. Robert Grady, R-Onslow, proposed the bill requiring public governing bodies to videotape or audiotape closed sessions of public meetings.The bill would not change the portion of the current statute that restricts transcripts of closed meetings from becoming public record until the need for privacy can no longer be justified. Multimember N.C. Districts Face Extinction, Redistricting

A bill proposed in the N.C. General Assembly on Monday that would eliminate multimember districts for the N.C. House and Senate was met with opposition from local legislators.Sen. Virginia Foxx, R-Watauga, who proposed Senate Bill 31, said creating single-member districts would allow more equal representation.."There are some districts that are very tiny and others that are very large," she said.

Basnight Names 3 to Committee

An oversight committee created to ensure that money from the $3.1 billion bond referendum is used effectively received its first members Tuesday.Senate Speaker Pro Tem Marc Basnight announced three appointments to the Higher Education Bond Oversight Committee. House Speaker Jim Black will appoint three members. The chairman of the Board of Governors and the chairman of the State Board of Community Colleges will each appoint two.Paul Fulton, CEO of Bassett Furniture and former dean of the Kenan-Flagler Business School, will co-chair the committee.
