UNC-NAACP holds demonstration in protest of Rahsheem Holland's promotion

On Monday, July 12, the NAACP held a demonstration in protest of Rahsheem Holland's promotion as acting Chief of UNC Police.  The demonstration started with remarks from UNC-Chapel Hill NAACP President Jarrah Faye, who said students at the June 30 protest were not aware or informed that the Board of Trustees meeting would be closed.  “I’m not surprised, and I’m sure nobody else here is, because they are known for brutalizing students, and they are known for specifically harassing black students,” she said.

UNC Black Student Movement holds a demonstration in support of Nikole Hannah-Jones

On Friday, UNC's Black Student Movement held a protest outside of Wilson Library in support of Nikole Hannah-Jones. UNC Student Body President Lamar Richards spoke at the event. Richards said he supported the demonstration and was displeased with the decision not to grant Nikole Hannah-Jones tenure. "They say Trustees aren't supposed to talk, aren't supposed to speak out," he said. "But I was elected by a population of 30,000 students to represent them, and I'm going to do that."

Black Lives Matter door knocked down again at University United Methodist Church

A display honoring the Black Lives Matter movement outside of University United Methodist Church was knocked down sometime between the evening of Thursday, May 6 and the morning of Friday, May 7. While a restored version was put back on display by May 14, Rev. Justin Coleman voiced concern that the person or people who knocked down the door might be willing to do harm to people either verbally or physically.

UNC and Chapel Hill community members rally in support of Nikole Hannah-Jones

UNC and Chapel Hill community members gathered Thursday morning to show their support for Nikole Hannah-Jones ahead of the Board of Trustees' 9 a.m. meeting at The Carolina Inn. The rally was organized by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP and the Carolina Black Caucus in response to the BOT's choice to not take action on approving a tenured position for Hannah-Jones at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media.
