Seniors test University skills at decathlon

A group of seniors showed Sunday afternoon that they had learned a few tricks outside of the classroom during their time at UNC. More than 20 seniors gathered in the Pit to test a special set of skills that only an experienced UNC student would have as part of the first Senior Decathlon.

Med school plans on hold

Despite a growing need for doctors in North Carolina the School of Medicine has been forced to put a 10-year $450 million expansion plan on hold indefinitely. The expansion would have allowed UNC to build new facilities in Charlotte and Asheville — as well as an additional building in Chapel Hill — and to increase medical school enrollment from 160 first-year students per year to 230.

Laid-off employees to get aid

Chancellor Holden Thorp announced a $445000 Employee Assistance Fund on Friday designed to assist employees who will inevitably be laid off in response to next year's budget cuts. It is still uncertain just how significant layoffs will be because the state budget has not been finalized and the implications of the federal stimulus plan are still unclear.

Grad schools likely to shrink

Fiscal woes at UNC might leave fewer graduate school applicants celebrating acceptance letters this April than in years past. In anticipation of significant budget cuts for the next fiscal year University officials expect many academic departments to admit fewer graduate students.

Carroll gets comical

A new exhibit in Carroll Hall shows how long-standing Southern stereotypes — those describing a land of slow-talking moonshine-swilling poverty-stricken folks — came to exist through comic strips. Through May" UNC will host ""Comic Stripped: A Revealing Look at Southern Stereotypes in Cartoons"" an exhibit on loan from the Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte.

Old Well Watch prevents Wolfpack attack

Participants in Carolina Fever's first Old Well Watch found themselves the victims of a drive-by water balloon attack and engaged in a cross-campus chase as they thwarted vandalism to campus landmarks. The event — held Friday night into Saturday morning — also served as a pep rally before Saturday's football game against N.C. State.

Fever to protect Old Well begin tradition

Hundreds of Carolina Fever members will keep an all-night vigil over the Old Well tonight protecting it from potential vandals on the eve of the UNC-N.C. State football game. Fever is hosting the first Old Well Watch in response to an incident last year when red paint was splashed on the campus icon before the same matchup. Fever board members said they hope it will become a mainstay.

Sailing club partners with Bald Head Island

The wind was blowing and the rain wasn't falling Saturday as the UNC Sailing Club enjoyed the benefits of its newly formed partnership with Bald Head Island for the first time. ""It was unbelievable" said junior business major Logan Rowell. There was heavy wind" and it was a big experience for people who haven't gotten to sail like that before.""
