Lighting Tour on Campus Reveals Few Fresh Needs

Few students and University officials showed up Tuesday for the usual semester lighting tour despite its reputation for keeping student safety in the spotlight. Electric Systems, the section of the Division of Facilities Services that maintains the lighting throughout the University, has been sponsoring the walk for about 10 years. This semester's tour focused heavily on North Campus lighting, and participants noted only a few areas for improvement.

Safe Escort Funding in Jeopardy

Students wait up to 30 minutes for a ride. Unpaid bills sit in the student government office. And an unapproved golf cart sits in the middle of the controversy. SAFE Escort, an organization that gives students rides across campus at night, has been under scrutiny for several months because of corruption in former leaders and inefficient bookkeeping.

Candidates Pit-Sit to Discuss Issues, Inform Student Voters

State and local candidates tried to sway student voters Tuesday during UNC's first Political Action Day, held in the Pit. The Political Action Coalition for Modern America Nonpartisans sponsored the event, which hosted 24 candidates from Orange County and across the state. With posters and promotional materials scattered among the tables, candidates fielded questions regarding both local issues and prominent national issues such as the Iraqi crisis.

New Internet Legislation Will Not Exempt WXYC From Fees

WXYC, UNC's campus radio station, remains unaffected by a bill approved by the U.S. House on Oct. 7 intended to lower the cost burden on small radio stations, and the station will have to abide by provisions passed months ago. The new legislation is intended to help small radio stations that faced going out of business Oct. 20, when the new rates are set to take effect. The new agreement leaves out campus radio stations like WXYC from the legislation.

500 Runners Rise Early To Benefit Cancer Research

About 500 runners braved the record-high temperatures and early hours Saturday morning to help raise money for cancer research in the fourth annual Hooker 5K. The 3.1-mile race began on an annual basis four years ago in honor of the late Chancellor Michael Hooker, who died of cancer. All proceeds benefit UNC's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. "(Hooker) was very in-tune with students and we wanted to do something in honor of him," said Kris Willett, Carolina Athletic Association president and one of the event's organizers.

2 Congress Seats Remain Vacant

The two remaining winning candidates for Student Congress accepted their seats last week, while another special election looms to fill two remaining vacancies. Board of Elections Chairman Brian Fauver said Friday that Stephanie Hunter, District 2, and Doug Lecompte, District 14, confirmed their seats. Both were elected in a special election held Tuesday. Hunter, a graduate student in the School of Social Work,will represent students in the schools of Education, Social Work and Journalism and Mass Communication.

Opposing Views Clash at Anti-War Teach-In

Anti-war panelists addressed a standing-room-only crowd of about 250 students, faculty, alumni and community members Monday night, urging them to support the nonviolence movement in the United States. Both boos and cheers echoed throughout the room as five panelists discussed issues like the Bush administration's stance on Iraq and the potential effects of the war on the homeland.
