UNC says no pets allowed

An increasing number of colleges are allowing students to bring their furry friends to their dorms.

But at UNC, that is not the case.

According to the UNC Community Living Standards, students are only allowed to have fish in a tank that holds 12 gallons or less. All other animals are prohibited — this includes, dogs, cats, and reptiles.

The document says all other residents of the room must agree to keep a fish tank in the room. These regulations do not apply to those who require the use of a service animal.

“In any year, we may have two to three times when it comes to our attention that people have illegal pets,” said Rick Bradley, assistant director of assignments and communications at UNC. “Dogs, snakes and reptiles are the more common ones.”

Since owning an illegal pet in UNC residence halls is a violation of the housing contract, Bradley said there might be repercussions to owning an illegal pet.

Senior business major Nia Hall said she had dogs at home but believes dorms should remain pet free.

“Honestly I don’t want another person’s pet in my space,” Hall said. “Not that I don’t like pets — they can become annoying sometimes, especially when they’re not yours.”

“I think it’s silly because I think that if people can take care of pets in apartments, they will be able to take care of pets in the dorm,” Varner said. “And with the ridiculous amount of money they spend on dorms, they should be allowed to keep pets.”
