Durham's Megafaun had one hell of a 2009. Releasing a great album in Gather, Form and Fly, garnering praise from respected media outlets such as Pitchfork.com and touring with acts such as Bon Iver, the experimental folkies made a splash in the minds of people outside the Tar Heel state. It makes good sense that the band would figure prominently in Dive's top ten lists for 2009, which you can all check out tomorrow in Dive's first issue of the new year. A great example of Megafaun's prowess is "The Process," a cut of of Gather. Rattling along on trash-can alley percussion, banjo and guitar, it combines the smooth side of country with the more aggressive edge of experimental folk with incredible dexterity. So, sit back, relax and enjoy a gem from one of North Carolina's rising stars.

Welcome back to Interesting CD Releases. I've got a big one for you this first week of the semester.

In honor of today's Year In Review issue of the DTH, Dive has compiled a slideshow of photos to sum up the events and happenings in Triangle music this year. Take a look and enjoy.

Hey guys. It's Tuesday again, and unlike last week there's actually one or two interesting things to talk about. So let's get to it.

Brendan Benson is more than a Raconteur. Well, it might be better to say that he's a raconteur that's got more on his mind than the aggressive rock 'n' roll swagger of The Raconteurs, the powerhouse band he takes part in with White Stripe Jack White. On My Old, Familiar Friend, Benson's first solo record since joining up with the band, the singer/songwriter takes an easy stroll through '60s and '70s pop with big hooks and catchy melodies. Tonight, Benson will bring his neo-McCartney stylings to Cat's Cradle. The show starts at 9 p.m. and costs $15. In anticipation of the show, Diversions Editor Jordan Lawrence caught up with Benson for a quick chat about album titles, influences and the lessons learned from a taste of the big time.

Friday night Diversions and our friends at Local 506 will play host to three of the area's best bands in our seventh semiannual Dive Party. Transcendently anthemic indie rockers Aminal will hit the stage first, followed by the powerful pop rock of I Was Totally Destroying It. Both lead up to a headlining set by the propulsive, tongue-twisting fun of Raleigh folk-rock band Lonnie Walker. The show starts at 10 p.m. and will cost you the low, low price of FREE.

Director Antoine Fuqua may have an uneven directorial record, but there’s always something slick and watchable about his films, from “Training Day” to 2007’s tepid “Shooter.” Fuqua’s new film is a crime thriller called “Brooklyn’s Finest,” and it looks to be in the vein of the former, not the latter, even though it includes Richard Gere in a starring role. Thankfully, Gere will be backed up by the likes of Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, Wesley Snipes, and Vincent D’Onofrio, among others. The trailer isn’t an official theatrical cut, but it still makes the film look like an entertaining, violent portrayal of street crime. So yeah, pretty much like “Training Day.”

Unless you're interested in glam-rock obsessed American Idol winners and musical Ladies with questionable gender, I don't see a whole lot in this week's record store haul. But despite this week's lack of quality loot, there is one jewel among the pile.

If you don't believe that Concord's The Avett Brothers have really broken it big time, you will after watching this entertaining little clip for "Slight Figure of Peach." The premise of selling their album over a crappy version of QVC is fantastic, and the dichotomy between the flashes of the band's frenetic energy and tame on-TV persona is hard not tot take as savvy, self-aware acknowledgement of the band's transformation since jumping onto the national stage.

Ah, radio rock, how you are sorely missed in our culture. There's something about an electric riff, a uncontrollable heartbeat rhythm and everyman lyrics about the inescapable allure of women that's just hard to resist. And while this sort of throw-it-all-to-the-wind single is almost as good as gone on our current FM dial, Chapel Hill's Dynamite Brothers bring the goods in large amounts. A perfect example of their expertise in the genre is "Can't Stop Falling In Love." Just try to resist this bright, pounding, rock 'n' roll song of the week. I dare you.

This week at the record store you'll find two vert interesting new releases: one, an attempt to get a once promising career back on track, the other, what looks to be a promising start by some fresh talent.
(11/10/09 11:06pm)
OK, so I see nothing interesting coming out this Tuesday. Two interesting local discs are hitting next week and have parties celebrating this week, but I'll save those for next week. Plus you'll start hearing plenty about them starting tomorrow anyway.

Starting today, the Dive blog is debuting a new robust schedule of weekly posts, one each maintained by each member of staff. Though a few of these posts won't come online until just a little bit later, the bulk of them have either made their debut in the last couple weeks or will be starting in this coming one. Below is a schedule with short descriptions of these posts.

Happy November guys. Let's see what the first week in Turkey Month has for us as we head into the holiday shopping season.

Students at UNC are in for a treat tonight. Smoldering with emotional intensity and alive with rich, evocative orchestrally minded arrangements, Chapel Hill's Lost In The Trees is one of the best band's in the Triangle. Tonight at 8 p.m. students will be able to see them live at Gerard for free. Others pay $5. To get you guys hyped up for the performance, this week's featured local song is "Fireplace." In it singer Ari Picker tears apart the idea of love as his band marches along to ferocious bass line and slashes of aching strings. Get excited.

Lots of goodies waiting for you at the record store this week, so let's get right to it.

Durham's Luego is an anomaly in the Triangle. A big, bold retro-tinged pop-rock band that's content to just do what it does. The package here isn't buried in lo-fi. The band's new record Taped-Together Stories isn't some highfalutin' concept album. No, the band's mission is thoroughly unpretentious, an attempt to throw genuine emotion on top of a great hook and take it for a ride. In anticipation of the band's CD release party Saturday at Local 506 Diversions Editor Jordan Lawrence sat down with singer/songwriter/leader Patrick Phelan at Jesse's in Carrboro for a quick chat over coffee:

Quirky week at the record store this Tuesday. I've got three things to talk about, two that I'm pretty excited about and one very unfortunate Christmas album that's really boiling my holiday goose.
