Carson wraps up busy summer

Eve Carson didn’t take classes this summer, but her schedule was packed with meetings and planning sessions.

And starting Tuesday, she’ll have to add 8 a.m. labs to an already full calendar.

The student body president said that after a busy summer she expects the school year to test her time and resources.

“It’s going to be tremendously challenging to balance studies with student government and all activities associated with senior year,” Carson said.

With a 14-hour course load, Carson said she will have more time to work with student government.

“I’ve got some good classes, and I hope I can appreciate them,” she said.

In her official role, Carson said she worked to create a new sophomore orientation and expand undergraduate research this summer.

Former Student Body President James Allred said he set goals to accomplish during summer 2006, including work with the state legislature, as officials drew up their yearly budget.

“What we did before the start of the summer was set out about a third of the platform and tried to accomplish those things,” said Allred, who spent all but one weekend in his hometown of Chapel Hill.

Carson spent most of her summer in Chapel Hill, though she was in Atlanta for a two-week internship with the business consulting firm Bain & Company. She also traveled to Washington, D.C., and her hometown, Athens, Ga.

While Carson completed her internship, Student Body Vice President Mike Tarrant stood as acting student body president for a speech at one C-TOPS event.

“The good thing was that she was able to maintain communication with me,” Tarrant said.

Continuing to delegate responsibilities and manage time effectively will be key as the school year begins, he said.

“Eve and I and the rest of the student government officers have always been really busy in other extracurriculars,” he said. “This isn’t something new for us.”

Carson said she already learned to be more efficient when she discovered this summer that answering e-mails can take hours.

“I’m going to live with a watch on my hand and an eye on the clock.”
