The win was a long time coming for a program that has experienced more than its fair share of ups and downs since the 2014-2015 season — the last time the Tar Heels made the NCAA Tournament. It's also the first time UNC has taken down the No. 1 team in the country since 2006.
However, the women's basketball team was not the only North Carolina squad that got a hard-fought victory over the weekend.
UNC is now 8-5 and 1-0 in ACC play with six regular season matches remaining.
Tennis
The No. 3 women's tennis team clinched a berth to the 2019 ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a 4-0 win over Princeton on Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Senior Jessie Aney led the way with both a singles and doubles win. Now, the Tar Heels face Vanderbilt before attempting to defend their title in February.
On Friday, the UNC gymnastics team hosted its Diversity and Inclusion meet. The Tar Heels fell to N.C. State, 195.200-194.650, but the squads stood up together for equality.
“Equality means any person, regardless of their gender, ethnic background, race or sexual orientation, any person should be respected and treated and valued in whatever they pursue,” head coach Derek Galvin said. “The message from Chancellor Folt during the time she’s been here within this community is that Carolina takes pride in the fact that this is a community where diversity is valued, and people are treated equally for the most part.”
Men's lacrosse
The No. 12 men's lacrosse team took on No. 6 Loyola in a rematch of the 2016 Final Four. UNC lost the scrimmage, 15-10, in a match that showed head coach Joe Breschi what his team needs to do to improve moving forward.
