Republican Party's gathering in Raleigh kicks off - results so far show Lawson in the lead

The crowd at the state’s Republican Party gathering has collected around a giant TV in the Marriott Raleigh City Center as the polls close in North Carolina. Fox News is the network of choice. As Fox covers the Senate race, occasional cheers erupt from the crowd — about 200 people at this point.

The large room is festively decorated — a net of red, white and blue balloons hanging overhead, presumably to be released when B.J. Lawson, the Republican candidate challenging U.S. Rep. David Price in the 4th district race, wins the seat in Congress. And Lawson’s website is festive, too — it invites the public to the ‘victory party’ at the Marriott afterward.

Incumbent Price’s seat is considered “safe” or “leaning Democrat” — something not betrayed by the cheerful atmosphere at the event. Early voting results show Lawson up by 3 points.
