FSU says no to saggy pants

Fayetteville State University is telling students to pull up their sagging pants before entering the cafeteria.

At the beginning of the semester, the university hired security guards and officials from the university’s department of residence life to enforce the no-sagging-pants measure and to turn away students dressed in pajamas.

“We would like our students to dress in a manner indicative or representative of a college student,” said the university’s spokesman Jeffery Womble. “We have been reminding them that some clothing isn’t appropriate for a cafeteria setting or a college setting.”

The university’s student government asked for the security guards to be removed immediately.
“The guards were there for a day before we took action,” said the university’s Student Body President Jermaine Pittman.

“Originally, the student reaction was negative,” he said. “If you tell someone how they can dress at a public institution — where you don’t provide them clothing — it can be an issue with the students.”

The security guards did not use force or monitor any other form of behavior.

The guards were removed after a few days, but officials from the university’s residence life department remain at the university’s cafeteria door, asking certain students to pull up their pants before going inside, Pittman said.

“That’s basically where it is now,” he said.
