"Alderfolk" discuss traffic

At a Tuesday night meeting, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen unanimously approved a traffic calming request for Rossburn Way, located in the Kent Woodlands neighborhood.

The request to implement traffic calming measures was submitted by a neighborhood resident in Nov. 2010, and was re-evaluated again in July 2011.

The posted speed limit is 25 mph, but residents say cars have been traveling at faster speeds, endangering children and pedestrians.

At the meeting, the town traffic and parking committee recommended implementing stage one traffic calming measures.

Stage one measures include “soft measures,” such as traffic signs and marks, while stage two measures include physical barriers such as speed bumps.

Notable

The board unanimously approved adding picnic tables and a doggie bag dispenser to Martin Luther King Jr. Park in next year’s budget.

The board also discussed changing the name of the Board of Aldermen to remove tension with the name’s gender.

People who were uncomfortable with the gender of the name have been calling the board members “Alderfolk.”

Quotable

“I personally don’t think we need to change the name of the board, but I feel it’s something we need to talk about,” Alderman Dan Coleman said.

“We have multiple children who play in the area and there are cars that travel 30 plus miles on hour. We are concerned about the cost of stage 2 more than anything, but we want our children to be safe,” said Jill Hill, a resident of 313 Rossburn Way who initiated the traffic calming petition.
