De La Rosa violated the campaign rules in letter

TO THE EDITOR: In submitting his letter “Ingram’s Board of Elections complaint is legitimate,” De La Rosa committed the very violation of which he has accused Mr. Lee. The very Title VI bill which De La Rosa cites defines campaign staff as “any person who assists the activities of campaigning.” Campaigning is then defined as “any act … that has the effect of promoting the interests of a campaign.” In decrying Lee, one of Ingram’s potential opponents, De La Rosa is advancing the interests of Ingram’s campaign.

Possible SBP candidates to be investigated by Board of Elections

Though they might face punishment by the Board of Elections for illegal campaigning, Student Body Secretary Ian Lee and junior Rick Ingram aren’t worried, they said. The board can levy fines or increases in the number of signatures they would be required to collect to become certified student body president candidates. But both possibilities would only be enforced if Lee or Ingram choose to run.

Hogan Medlin vetoes Student Congress' redistricting bill

The passage of the redistricting bill that has been discussed and tweaked by Student Congress for three months was stalled Nov. 23 due to a veto — Student Body President Hogan Medlin’s first. But the veto is likely to be overridden tonight at the full meeting of Student Congress, several members of the body said.

Both two- and four-legged models graced the runway Saturday to help raise money for animal welfare.UNC’s Helping Paws held a fundraising fashion show Saturday night in the Student Union to benefit the Orange County Animal Services Center.The group sold more than 200 tickets, the money from which will go to the center’s spay-and-neuter initiatives.“The idea has been circulating several years” said Alex Lane, a co-chairwoman of Helping Paws.

Tuition survey seeks student opinion, ideas

Faced with a $3.5 billion state budget shortfall and an anticipated $54 million in cuts to the University, student government is seeking to measure just how much students think their bills should rise. It is doing so by conducting an online survey that asks for students’ opinions on how they want the University to deal with imminent budget cuts.

College Republican's Berlin Wall display stolen

Unlike the original Berlin Wall, which fell to great public spectacle in 1989, a replica made by UNC College Republicans quietly disappeared Tuesday morning on the 21st anniversary of the wall’s fall. The group planned to tear down the mock wall as part of the Young America’s Foundation Freedom Week and has reported the theft to campus police.

Congress rules committee passes Title VI elections bill

The rules and judiciary committee of Student Congress passed a bill Tuesday that would reorganize Title VI of the Student Code. The committee clarified certain vague sections of the bill including when and where a candidate can publicly declare candidacy. The discussion of signatures led to the idea of increasing the time period to collect signatures from five days to seven, mimicking last year’s election rules.
