Inspired by The Michigan Daily's women sports initiative, The Daily Tar Heel is making a renewed commitment to covering the stories of the women in athletics from the perspective of the women on our sports staff.
The DTH is introducing The Women In Sports series, which will produce stories once a week about women by women for the coming year.

In August, UNC first-year Reese Brantmeier won her first Grand Slam match in the pro-division of the U.S. Open. Now, Brantmeier will be playing for the Tar Heels as the only first-year on the team in the spring with hopes to return to the Open next year.

Although her main focus is doing whatever it takes to help her team win, Chapel Hill High School junior Brook Harker is aware of her platform as the school's first female football player. Unlike most of the other small number of women playing football, who usually play non-contact roles like kicker, Brook specializes in playing free safety. In last Friday’s game, Brook managed to kick for two extra points, deflect a pass, catch an interception and even play a few snaps on offense.

After spending four years on the North Carolina women's basketball team, it's clear Liz Roberts' growing legacy at UNC has gone far beyond the classroom. At around 9 years old, Elizabeth Culton attended her first North Carolina gymnastics meet with her parents, both of whom are Tar Heel alumni. Awestruck, she leaned over to her grandfather, Bill Cobey, one of UNC’s past athletic directors, and said the wishful words that would one day come true. “I told him I wanted to be a UNC gymnast,” she said.

First-year women's golfer Natalia Aseguinolaza, a native of San Sebastian, Guipuzcoa, Spain, made her transition to UNC during this virtual fall semester. 2020 is the 30th anniversary of the 1990 UNC women's soccer NCAA Championship team, one of the greatest collegiate teams in soccer history. The Tar Heels saw their 103 no-loss streak snapped after a 3-2 loss to Connecticut after a questionable call and free kick En route to a national championship, North Carolina defeated N.C. State on a last minute goal in a game dubbed the "Greatest Game in Women's Soccer History." UNC avenged its loss to UConn in the NCAA Championship, defeating the Huskies 6-0, with the largest margin of victory in NCAA history to that point.

Destiny Cox was slated to be the next great track star in her family, before she made a important announcement to her family. She wanted to play volleyball instead. As a four-your starter at Carrboro High School, Destiny led the team to a pair of Eastern Region runner-up finishes in 2014-15 and helped capture back-to-back state titles in 2016 and 2017, going on to earn NCHSAA 2A State Most Valuable Player honors two consecutive years. “My greatest accomplishment would be coming to UNC," Cox said. "Just because I could have honestly gone anywhere in the country I wanted to play volleyball, and so deciding to come here to an ACC school definitely surprised a lot of people, but I'm super proud of it.”
