First year quarterback Sam Howell (7) looks to make a pass during a game against UVA in Kenan Stadium on Nov. 2, 2019.

'That’s Sam': How Sam Howell went from hometown hero to UNC superstar

Sam Howell's rise to fame as UNC's starting quarterback might have come as a surprise to some, but not for the people who know him best back home.  For years, his hometown has been marveling over his athletics gifts, but also his selflessness to always put others before himself.  Tad Baucom, his former high school coach, knows just what it looks like when Howell cares about someone like family.  For his talents and his person, UNC devoted 11 days straight to recruiting him away from Florida State.

Destiny Cox (1) spikes against UNC-Greensboro in Carmichael Arena Friday, Aug. 31.

Destiny Cox, a Tar Heel born and bred superstar for UNC Volleyball

Destiny Cox was slated to be the next great track star in her family, before she made a important announcement to her family. She wanted to play volleyball instead. As a four-your starter at Carrboro High School, Destiny led the team to a pair of Eastern Region runner-up finishes in 2014-15 and helped capture back-to-back state titles in 2016 and 2017, going on to earn NCHSAA 2A State Most Valuable Player honors two consecutive years. “My greatest accomplishment would be coming to UNC," Cox said. "Just because I could have honestly gone anywhere in the country I wanted to play volleyball, and so deciding to come here to an ACC school definitely surprised a lot of people, but I'm super proud of it.”
