UNC on wrong end of improbable comeback as Tar Heels fall just short of national title

In Monday night's national championship game against UCLA, the Bruins scored the equalizer off a set piece in the 90th minute and went on to win double overtime, 3-2.  The game was an opportunity for the Tar Heels to get revenge over the Bruins – who handed them their first loss of the season back in September – as well as win UNC's first national championship in a decade. But, as the final horn sounded, several UNC players sank to the pitch in anguish. "There's nothing you can really say to assuage (the players') pain," Dorrance said. "But, you know, this is what I guess the best parts of athletics are all about. I mean, you really get to feel life in moments like that."

Late goals from UCLA doom UNC women's soccer in 3-2 national championship loss

The North Carolina women’s soccer team fell to UCLA, 3-2, in the national championship game on Monday evening.  While the game seemed to be decided for the Tar Heels in the waning seconds, a last-minute Bruins goal brought the game into extra time. The Tar Heels could not produce any final chances in the last two minutes. The stunning loss is the third-consecutive national championship defeat for the Tar Heels. Their championship drought is extended another year.

Preview: UNC women's soccer prepares for third matchup against Florida State in College Cup semifinal

North Carolina’s third matchup against Florida State may prove to be one of the toughest, and most telling, games the team will play, and will serve to define the season as a whole. In order to emerge victorious and have a chance at inching one step closer to claiming the program's first national title in 10 years, UNC will have to dig deep and play with the principles that have taken the team to this point.
