Democrats Ask for Hike in Pell Grants

One year after President Bush signed into law his No Child Left Behind Act, U.S. Senate Democrats are calling for more federal funding for programs outlined in the act, including higher education financial aid. Forty-three Senate Democrats sent a letter to Bush on Jan. 8 asking him to consider increases in education funding for the 2003 fiscal year. In July 2002, the Senate Appropriations Committee proposed $3.2 billion in funding for education. In the letter, the Democratic senators requested an additional $4.5 billion.

More Students Head to Grad School

Graduate and professional schools across the Triangle are experiencing a surge of interest from recent graduates who are choosing to further their education rather than enter a diminishing job market. But student interest is not just limited to traditional programs like business and law. More students are choosing to pursue graduate programs in a wide variety of fields, such as the humanities. Applications to the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law jumped 37 percent for the 2001-02 school year and by 15 percent for the Duke University School of Law.

Protesters Rally Against War

RALEIGH -- More than 100 protesters gathered outside Crabtree Valley Mall on Sunday afternoon to encourage people to take an active stance against U.S. involvement in a war with Iraq. The busy intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Marriott Drive was flooded with anti-war signs, instruments and the sound of car horns responding to signs with slogans like "Honk if you agree" and "Not in our name."

Grocery Store Shoppers Can Give to UNC-W

Grocery store patrons now can donate money to UNC-Wilmington via a new partnership. UNC-W formed the first collegiate partnership with Harris Teeter last week as part of the Together in Education Program. The program has allocated funds to various educational facilities through customer contribution since its founding in 1998. When customers scan their discount cards at one of the 142 grocery stores in the South, a percentage is allocated to the school of their choice. UNC-W now will be included on the list of educational funding recipients.
