Alumna named Rhodes Scholar

Months of preparation recently paid off for a UNC alumnus after she endured a brutal application process and became the 38th UNC graduate to win the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. Rachel Mazyck, graduate of the class of 2002, is the third UNC student in as many years to receive the award, which provides full tuition, board, living expenses and travel expenses at Oxford University in England. Officials selected Mazyck out of a pool of 904 applicants from 341 universities.

Panel's stipends raise questions

Several faculty members have questioned the legitimacy of a proposed program in Western studies after learning that faculty members who developed the program received funding from Art and John William Pope. To fund the planning stage of the project, the Popes donated $25,000 to faculty members who served on the committee charged with developing a Western studies curriculum.

Veto might kill election bill

A contentious bill that defines negative campaigning during student elections likely will go back to the drawing board now that an executive veto has forced Student Congress to revisit the issue. Members had mixed reactions after Student Body President Matt Calabria struck down the bill Wednesday in a move that marked the first executive veto of a bill since February 2003, but most agreed that they will have to make changes if the proposal is to stay alive.

Allred chosen to fill office

Student Body President Matt Calabria named sophomore James Allred as the new student body secretary Sunday, ending a three-week search for the post. Calabria tapped Allred, a Morehead Scholar and an executive assistant to Calabria, to replace out-going secretary Bernard Holloway, who resigned Sept. 19 because of family concerns. Allred possessed an attitude that set him apart from the other highly qualified candidates, Calabria said. "He's passionate about being an ambassador to the student body," he said. "That's essentially the job of the secretary."

Research group strives to preserve the South

Tucked in an obscure corner on the fourth floor of Hamilton Hall, the Center for the Study of the American South quietly strives to study and preserve the history and culture of the region. The study of the South has made UNC one of the top-rated universities in the nation, said Harry Watson, director of the center. "UNC built its greatness around studying its own region," he said. "Other universities had the funding to study the whole world, the oceans and the planet Neptune. We didn't, so we focused on our own backyard."

24 hours of improv starts tomorrow

University students, members of the community and volunteers from as far away as Utah will come together tonight to bring a few laughs to the campus and raise money for charity. Performers will take the stage at 9 p.m. in 100 Hamilton Hall and battle exhaustion as they perform for 24 hours as part of the third annual 24LIVE improv comedy marathon. Part of the money will be donated to Tikun Olam, an organization that provides Thanksgiving dinners to local families identified by the Inter-Faith Council as needing assistance.
