Local domestic violence reports up by 16 percent
By MATT HAIR | March 24Domestic violence is on the rise in the area, according to a recent police report. The Chapel Hill Police Department announced this week that reported domestic dispute cases increased by 16 percent in 2004 — amounting to 526 cases during that time. Assaults occurred in 175 of the cases and resulted in 138 related arrests, the report states. The Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange County is working in conjunction with the department in its efforts to prevent the rise from continuing.
