Residents opt for alternative christmas shopping

The annual Alternative Christmas event, held at the United Church of Chapel Hill on Saturday and Sunday morning, offered locals the opportunity to purchase unique Christmas gifts such as handmade Guatemalan purses or woven baskets from Ghana. Proceeds from the event will go directly to various charities, nonprofit organizations and impoverished countries around the world.

Community plays with ideas for new park

Carrboro kids soon will be slipping down spiral slides, ascending twisty climbers and slithering through tunnels thanks to a new Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department project at Baldwin Park. The department held a meeting at the Carrboro Century Center on Thursday evening to gather community input on new playground features for the park. Features that were discussed included bubble, dinosaur and tic-tac-toe activity panels, race car panels and playship anchors. "Swings are a must. Kids love the swings," said local resident Linda Carver.

Local hotel recognized as one of nation's best

The Fearrington House Country Inn's nostalgic Southern hospitality won it the coveted No. 7 spot in this year's Zagat Survey for the nation's best hotels with fewer than 100 rooms. The inn, nestled in the wooded Pittsboro countryside, was rated by past guests based on the quality of its rooms, service, dining and public facilities. The Fearrington House received a rating of "extraordinary to perfection" for dining, rooms and service, according to the survey.

County provides various Halloween activities

Whether it be the whiff of lilac perfume from a ghostly apparition or a close encounter with a pair of sharp, glistening teeth, Halloween in Orange County this year will surely prove to be a ghastly affair. Though the celebration on Franklin Street seems to receive most of the hype, other parts of the county also will provide activities for revelers. The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough is hosting a Haunted Hillsborough Guided Walking Tour on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.

Local currency celebrates 3rd anniversay

Amid an atmosphere of fiddling violins, a washtub bass and a vegetarian potluck that included vegan chili and tofu chocolate pie, NC Plenty Inc. kicked off its third anniversary celebration Sunday at Spence's Farm in Chapel Hill. The Plenty is a local currency that supports local businesses in Alamance, Orange, Durham and Chatham counties.

Marriott opens new hotel in Chapel Hill

The Courtyard by Marriott opened a new hotel in Chapel Hill on Wednesday, providing another option for area visitors. The hotel, located at 100 Marriott Way, is across from the Friday Center and is about a mile from the University campus. Elizabeth McGlasson, a public relations representative of the Courtyard, said the N.C. 54 location appeared financially promising after extensive economic and competitive analysis was done.
