GPSF Considers Letter Scale to Replace Pass/Fail

Graduate students could face a letter grading scale similar to that of undergraduates as soon as next year if a proposal is approved by the Faculty Council. In the meantime, graduate students can voice their opinions on the proposed grading scale in an online survey sponsored by the Graduate and Professional Student Federation. The survey will be accessible online until Saturday. As of Wednesday evening, 700 graduate students had taken the survey. The results will be presented to the Education Policy Subcommittee by the GPSF representative Wednesday.

Time, Money Rules for Campaigns May Change

Student government candidates will be forced to spend less money and campaign for a shorter period if new legislation is approved by Student Congress. Student government leaders will meet later this week to finalize the details of legislation designed to reform the student elections process. Student Body President Jen Daum and Speaker of Student Congress Tony Larson will introduce legislation containing the lowered figures to the Rules and Judiciary Committee of Congress by early next week.

Israeli Official Asks Students For Dialogue

The chief spokesman for the Embassy of Israel said Wednesday that Palestinian suicide bombings are unjustifiable but that he believes peace soon will be achieved. Mark Regev lectured on behalf of Caravan for Democracy, a nationwide initiative launched in March to promote constructive dialogue on college campuses about Israel, the Middle East's only democracy. During the speech, many in the 300-plus crowd in 111 Carroll Hall reacted loudly and intensely to Regev's opinions, as well as those of fellow audience members.

Sullivan to Leave Business School

Robert Sullivan, dean of UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School, will leave the University at the end of the calendar year to create a unique graduate business program in San Diego. Sullivan informed the business school faculty and staff of his resignation Tuesday after making his final decision to accept a position at the University of California-San Diego on Saturday. Julie Collins, senior associate dean of the business school, will serve as interim dean upon Sullivan's departure. Trustees, Residents Debate Facility Location

UNC Board of Trustees members heard Elkin Hills residents' concerns regarding the development of a 23-acre off-campus facility adjacent to the neighborhood at a subcommittee meeting Wednesday. Architects from Pease Associates presented the BOT Buildings and Grounds Committee with design plans for the facilities, which will include grounds, print, environmental, construction and energy services.

Med Student Remembered At Funeral

Third-year medical student Brett Pearce's compassion and zeal for life left an indelible impression on almost everyone he met, especially his fellow medical students. Pearce's family, friends and colleagues gathered Monday morning at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill to remember the 27-year-old student. Pearce died Friday morning from complications related to a virus he contracted treating a pediatric patient in January.

Student Leaders Plan for State of University Address

On the heels of Chancellor James Moeser's recent address to the University community, student government leaders said Tuesday that they will hold their own State of the University Address. Student Body President Jen Daum said she, Student Congress Speaker Tony Larson and Student Attorney General Amanda Spillman will speak at the address. The three said it is important for the campus community to hear the student government perspective on UNC's priorities following Moeser's Sept. 4 State of the University Address.
