Seniors begin to put in two cents on three gift proposals

After months of discussion, senior class officials unveiled the three options for this year's senior class gift Monday outside the Student Union. Senior marshals fielded questions in front of a table filled with free donuts and displays outlining the three options: a welcome sign at the entrance to campus outside McCorkle Place on Franklin Street, an artistic mural to be placed somewhere on campus and an endowment of at least $20,000 to the advising department. Seniors will vote for their favorite option in an election Nov. 1.

Council seeks to coalesce groups

Independence and individuality are hallmarks of many UNC organizations, but many soon will come together under the umbrella of the new student organization council to foster better communication between groups. The council will hold its first monthly meeting at 5 p.m. today. The group will eat together at Top of Lenoir and break up into small groups for discussion and debate. Overall, the council hopes to make a better assessment of campus and student group needs and thus make better use of the resources of those groups as a whole.

Speaker to share research findings

Seniors graduating this December will be sent into the real world after a commencement speech by Etta Pisano, Kenan professor of radiology and biomedical engineering. Pisano, who also is director of the Biomedical Research Imaging Center and a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, recently received national accolades for her work in breast cancer prevention research.

Masala begins week of events

Sounds of hip-hop and Latin music combined with the smells of Indian food in the Pit on Monday to provide students with a truly global experience. Masala, UNC's umbrella organization for multicultural groups, used the day to kick off its promotional week. Several of Masala's 15 cultural groups set up tables in the Pit to bring a taste of international experiences to UNC. Students and faculty lined up at the Association for India's Development table, where they could purchase Indian food from Sitar India Palace.
